Hi everyone -
We'll meet at the Columbus Museum of Art on Sunday Feb. 3rd, from 3-5pm. We can meet up in the lobby by the main entrance off of the parking lot, and then disperse through the museum as our interests and eyes lead us. Around 4:15 or so, let's plan to meet back in the same lobby for a discussion about what pieces struck our interest and to share our most insightful artistic interpretations (or not....)
If you want to do your research ahead of time, here is a Columbus Dispatch article about on of the current exhibitions: "Mark Rothko: The Decisive Decade." Also, you can look forward to this...
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

I have been thinking about about the Rothko paintings. Especially in his later work, I notice the minimalist direction he took. I think that I will visit the museum again and contemplate his later works. It seems to me that we often use excess to communicate certain truths. I think that when I view his work the next time I will find a great deal being said by the minimalist aspects of his works.
Many of the great artists of the 20th century were conveying something that I believe our over used to much to busy minds have not been able to see clearly. Perhaps it is time to delve more deeply into simplicity. I think, perhaps, I have missed a great deal by criticizing that simplicity and have missed a great deal of what God has for us if we would only pare down our theological and spiritual ideas to minimalism. St. Francis did this and I think it brought him closer to God than only complicated theological system that has been developed through the years.
