Welcome

The current installment of the COEC began meeting in 2007.

We are currently on a "break," for no particular reason, and many little reasons - mostly pertaining to life circumstances. If anyone is interested in calling a meeting, feel free to post on the blog, join the google group (see link below) and send an email, or contact either Nancy (nancykj10@yahoo.com) or Jesse (schroeder.jesse@gmail.com) for more information.

To receive cohort emails, join our Google group.

What would you like to talk about?

We would like to extend an invitation for you (or anyone) to ask any question or raise any topic for one of our discussion sessions. Whether you have attended our meetings before or not, you are welcome to ask a question or point out a concern - just something you would like to hear so-called "emergents" discuss. Nothing is off the table!

You can post your question in the comments section of this blogpost, or email schroeder.jesse@gmail.com. We'll post information regarding the discussion session later.

I would like to have a greater depth of understanding about stem cell research and am interested to hear others' perspectives.

Additionally my daughter Elizabeth is taking a course this quarter on globalization and I would like to hear others' perspectives on that subject as well.

Jesse in all I attended two meetings of the Central Ohio Emergent Cohort once this past autumn and one this winter. The subject of the autumn meeting was a discussion regarding the role of politics in the lifes of the members of this group. I mentioned at that time that I have had a strong interest in socialism through out much of my life. Currently I am in the process of reactivating my socialist politics and I am working to develop a socialist study group in Columbus Ohio. The first meeting will be on May 5 at the Global Gallery Coffee Shop at 7:00 PM. I would like to invite any members of the Central Ohio Emergent Cohort who is interested in the subject to the first meeting. Since it will be an introductory meeting I think that people would find it informative.

It is also possible that I could attend a meeting of the Central Ohio Cohort to discuss the subject if invited. For what it is worth I believe that the ideas of socialism are much more compatible with the values of Christianity than are those of capitalism. I would also argue that in spite of the seeming collapse of Socialism as a world ideology in the latter part of the 20th century, the ideas of socialism still have relevance and have the long term possibility of becoming the basis for a future civilization of justice. I think that the ideas of socialism, if integrated properly into thought and practice helps to prevent the domestication of liberal Christian and certainly fundamentalist views of justice and the taming of the vision of the kingdom of God. Yes in spite of the warnings from theologians that the kingdom of God and political ideologies should not be identified too closely, the problem is that in this society ideas of the kingdom of god are so vague, apolitical, or psychologically inward that discussion of the kingdom of god becomes so much theology and empty rhetoric. I think that socialist thought can be an antidote to that. These are some of my immediate thoughts on this issue. I will be very curious regarding the kind of response that I get to this suggestion.

Glenn I am really interested in how you see Christianity and Socialism working together.
