Welcome

The current installment of the COEC began meeting in 2007.

We are currently on a "break," for no particular reason, and many little reasons - mostly pertaining to life circumstances. If anyone is interested in calling a meeting, feel free to post on the blog, join the google group (see link below) and send an email, or contact either Nancy (nancykj10@yahoo.com) or Jesse (schroeder.jesse@gmail.com) for more information.

To receive cohort emails, join our Google group.

U2Charist

Jacob's Porch is conducting another U2charist on April 27, 6-8 p.m at Skully's. From JP's website: Our hope is to break down some of the consumer-church notions and turn Christians on to the heart God has for the poor, widow and orphan, both here and abroad. We will have the help of Jimmy Spencer to help bring this message home.  Has anyone ever been to one of these before?

I went to several U2charists last year while I was on internship in Cleveland. The band that will be there for Jacob Porch's is actually the band from the church in Cleveland where I went. I thought the services were really well done and I enjoyed them a lot. Maybe some of it has to do with the fact that I'm a huge U2 fan... but I also think the spiritual piece was there.

I plan on going when JP does this... anyone want to join me?

I figured you might have been to one of these before, Kate. I'm definitely planning to go, so maybe we could carpool.

I'll consider going as well Kate. Living downtown, I really struggle with my response to people who ask for money. It happens a lot.

While I was out for a walk the other day,a woman who was pregnant asked if I could give her any kind of job so she could earn money for formula and her children.

I just blanked. I didn't have any money with me and I didn't know how to respond. She said, "don't be sorry."

I don't want my heart to ever become hardned to those requests from the poor in the downtown area. After she left I thought I should have driven with her to the grocery and bought formula. I was so sad that I didn't.

There are many counterfeit people out there so how do I best use discernment?

I'm very open to learning a better response than to be afraid to give because "they'll just buy alcohol" or to give money every time which I don't believe is really appropriate either.

If anyone has suggestions to this, I would welcome them.

Also, could I ask you to pray for two people in my life who are experiencing darkness and despair?

Thank you. I really appreciate it.

I wish I could go! Tell the folks at JP, or anywhere else that wants to do a U2charist, that I'm always happy to chat with people about how it all started in Baltimore in 2004, and what I've learned (mostly from listening to others who have taken the idea and run with it) since then. I had absolutely NO idea doing the first service that anyone would be doing it a month later, let alone four years later and in different states and nations!

This was a fun night! Thanks Greg! I'm not sure what I expected of the U2Charist, but it seemed like a church service, in a bar, with U2 music as worship music. I have a hard time "worshiping" to "Sunday Bloody Sunday," but the band sounded really good. Also, the speaker was right on and really encouraging to us as we are thinking about outreach possibilities for the cohort. By far, my favorite part though was the interactive prayer stations -very cool.

What were other people's experiences/reactions?
